The Best Image Format for Shopify Is WebP
The short answer: use WebP for all your Shopify product images. WebP files are up to 80% smaller than JPG and PNG at the same quality, which directly improves your store's page load speed — and faster stores improve Core Web Vitals and tend to convert better.
Shopify has natively supported WebP uploads since 2020. There's no compatibility issue. You simply upload WebP files the same way you'd upload JPG, and they serve correctly to all modern browsers.

Google's ranking algorithm includes Core Web Vitals — specifically LCP (Largest Contentful Paint), which measures how fast the main content on a page loads. On most Shopify product pages, the hero product image IS the LCP element.
