Frequently asked questions

What is a HEIF file?+

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is a modern photo format that stores a picture in about half the space of a JPG. iPhones save it under the .heic name, and some Android phones, such as Samsung Galaxy models with high efficiency pictures turned on, save HEIF photos too. Files ending in .heif and .heic both open here.

Is HEIF the same as HEIC?+

Almost. HEIF is the container format, and HEIC is the name for HEIF photos compressed with HEVC, which is what phones use. Both open here and come out as the same kind of JPG.

Why won't my HEIF photo open on Windows?+

Windows needs extra codecs from the Microsoft Store to show HEIF, and many websites and apps don't support it at all. Converting to JPG gives you a file that opens everywhere.

Is this HEIF to JPG converter free?+

Yes. Conversion runs in your browser, so there is no account, no watermark and no limit from us.

Will the JPG keep the date the photo was taken?+

Yes. The date taken, camera and lens are copied into the JPG. GPS location is removed by default. Tick Keep location if you want it.

How many images can I convert at once?+

There's no fixed limit. Batches of several hundred are common and run in parallel across your CPU cores, so even large batches finish in seconds. It's completely free with no signup.

What if a photo won't convert?+

Your browser can't read a few unusual HEIF photos, such as very large panoramas. Those are marked, and you can convert them on our servers with a free account for 1 credit each, only if you choose to.
