How to resize to 2048 x 2048 on Windows, Mac and iPhone

The built-in apps do one photo at a time. Watch the shape: if the photo is not square, typing 2048 twice stretches it.

Windows (Paint)

  1. Open the photo in Paint and choose Resize.
  2. Pick Pixels and untick Maintain aspect ratio.
  3. Type 2048 for both sides and click OK, then save a copy.

Paint stretches a photo that isn't square. Crop it to a square first, or use Pad on this page to add bars instead.

Mac (Preview)

  1. Open the photo in Preview and choose Tools, then Adjust Size.
  2. Set the units to pixels and untick Scale proportionally.
  3. Type 2048 for width and height and click OK.

Preview overwrites the original when you save. Duplicate the file first, or use this page, which never touches your files.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open this page in Safari and tap the drop area.
  2. Choose Photo Library and pick your photos.
  3. Tap Resize, then download the ZIP to the Files app.

The Photos app can crop to Square but can't set a pixel size, so a crop there won't come out at exactly 2048 x 2048.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Shopify product images be?+

Shopify's help page says 2048 x 2048 px square images usually display best. It accepts up to 5000 x 5000 px, 25 megapixels and 20 MB per image.

How do I resize photos to 2048 x 2048?+

Drop them on this page. It opens on Exact size, 2048 x 2048, with Fit on Pad and a white background. Click Resize and download the ZIP.

Why should all my product photos be the same size?+

When every image has the same square shape, the product grid lines up and nothing jumps when a shopper switches photos. Pad makes any shape square without cutting the product.

Should I use JPG, PNG or WebP for Shopify?+

JPG is the safe choice for photos. PNG keeps transparency and sharp edges but makes bigger files. WebP is smaller still. Pick the format under Output format before you resize.

My photo is smaller than 2048 px. Will it look blurry?+

It has to be enlarged to reach 2048 px, and enlarging can't add detail. Start from the largest original you have.

Are my photos uploaded?+

No. The resizing runs in your browser, so your product photos stay on your device.
